The idea behind a fish spa is still not widely implemented - but also not entirely new anymore. Many customers are familiar with fish spas from their holiday in Turkey or Asia. Germany has been widely known for the concept but only through the VOX-Show ‘Goodbye Germany’. Millions of people followed the growth of Gregors Gregor’s Fish-Space in Paguera on Mallorca on TV and got inspired by the idea.

The fishes - Garra Rufas

The reddish log sucker (Garra Rufa), or doctor fish, is an up to 14 cm large fish from the family of the Cyprinidae. It’s original habitat is the river Jordan, the Orontes River and in the Euphrat-Tigris -System, as well as in some coastal rivers of northern Syria and the southern Turkey. Especially a population from the Kangal region in Turkey became popular, which is why they are also called Kangal fish. Characteristical is a reddish color of the tail fin. The Garra Rufa is also known as physio fish. They live in warm, nutrient-poor waters, which presents an evolutionary advantage. The fish get in contact with people without fear and nibble upper skin layers. This process is sometimes described as tickling. This process dissolves skin particles which then are eaten by the fish.
